The History, Mission and Strategy of MICAH

Biblical History

The biblical prophet, Micah, (meaning, “Who is like unto the Lord”) was a man who lived close to people and soil, possessing a keen affection for both. His hometown was known for producing men of courage and independence of thought. With these combinations at work, the prophet developed a ministry for common, but suffering people who were exploited by rich and unscrupulous noblemen. Micah became known as, “the prophet of the poor and downtrodden" who displayed a fearless spirit toward corrupt, inhumane rulers and time-serving religionists.

Our Mission

Since 1988, in the same likeness as the prophet, MICAH (the organization) has empowered citizens to rally for justice in pursuit of their individual and collective interests. A coalition of metropolitan leaders and over 35 congregations, we are dedicated to building power to create: better jobs, quality public schools, opportunities for youth, civil rights for immigrants and police accountability for all.

Believing that partnerships make the difference and with the support of local businesses, neighborhood associations and financial institutions, MICAH continues its mission and mandate… to do what is just!

Our Strategy

We believe that real power resonates with real people. Our strategy is helping residents realize that as a united, organized force, we can make real differences. Through educational training and planning, MICAH builds momentum with 35+ member congregations to address issues in the social, religious and political realms.
