53206 Holy Ground Youth and Young Adult Organizing Project

 

The 53206 Holy Ground Youth and Young Adult Organizing Project (PROJECT) is a new initiative, which will deepen relationships between participating congregations and neighborhood youth and young adults through an organizing process that will transform lives while substantially reducing mass incarceration and poverty in the 53206 zip code and surrounding areas.  A Young Adult Organizer will work with part-time Neighborhood Team Leaders to form and guide teams of 10-20 youth and young adults in each neighborhood of participating congregations. The teams will be led through an ongoing, expanding process of leadership development, spiritual formation, civic engagement, restorative justice, community service, and personal goals leading to a Holy Ground of safer, healthier neighborhoods and transformed lives. The Young Adult Organizer will lead this Project under the direct supervision of the MICAH Lead Organizer and with accountability as well to the Steering Committee of the PROJECT. 

This is a full time position.

 

 

Position Summary

The ideal candidate for the Young Adult Organizer position will have experience in community organizing, be a person of faith, and have the ability to develop empowering relationships with youth and young adults.  The Young Adult Organizer must have a deep understanding of the challenges facing youth and young adults in the 53206 zip code and surrounding areas and a passion to dismantle the school to prison pipeline.  The Young Adult Organizer must be capable of critical thinking with a talent for cutting and implementing issue campaigns that can have a positive impact on the lives of youth and young adults and significantly reduce the rates of mass incarceration on the near north side of Milwaukee.  The Young Adult Organizer must be a strong role model, a self-starter, a relational person, and fearless in engaging youth and youth adults in difficult neighborhoods.  Weeklong training with the Gamaliel national organizing network is a requirement for this position either prior to or shortly after hire.

 

Description of Duties

 

Leadership Development

    • Assists with identification and hiring of Neighborhood Team Leaders
    • Leads and directs the Neighborhood Team Leaders in developing teams totaling at least 100 youth and young adults from the 53206 zip code and surrounding areas
    • Helps to shape and guide the objectives and actions of neighborhood teams
    • Engages in ongoing 1:1 relational meetings with youth and young adults
    • Develops an organizing process in which youth and young adults grow in faith, leadership skills, civic engagement, and improved relations with law enforcement
    • Helps participating congregations to be strengthened through deepened relationships with neighborhood youth and young adults
    • Participates in coaching through professional Human Relations support in first year of employment

 

 Issue Development

    • Leads Neighborhood Teams in issue research and analysis
    • Participates in monthly meetings of the “11x15” Campaign and seeks to coordinate issue cuts and actions with this statewide campaign to reduce mass incarceration
    • Assists neighborhood teams in networking with possible allies and in forming strategic alliances
    • Guides neighborhood teams in successful issue cuts offering tangible hope in the 53206 zip code and surrounding areas

 

Fundraising

    • Works with the Steering Committee of the PROJECT and the MICAH Lead Organizer on funding strategies, including developing relationships with bestowment entities and writing grants

 

Accountability

    • Works under the direct supervision of the MICAH Lead Organizer
    • Participates in the monthly meetings of the Steering Committee
    • Generates and distributes a written report each month for the MICAH Lead Organizer and the Steering Committee
    • Participates in regular MICAH staff meetings and in WISDOM staff meetings as determined by the MICAH Lead Organizer
    • Develops strong relationships with the pastors of participating congregations

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

    • Strong commitment to the vision of thePROJECT
    • Personal attributes of integrity, flexibility, high energy
    • Experience working in community organizing and/or public affairs leadership
    • Ability to motivate leaders to take action
    • Self-motivated and highly organized
    • Willing to work flexible schedule, including evenings and periodic weekends
    • Ability to develop empowering relationships with youth and young adults from challenging backgrounds
